The engagement of youth in activities contributing to the implementation and realization of the national program as per the National Youth Policy (NYP) and the National Development Plan (NDP) which all speak to the 2030 Agenda is central to achieving global sustainability, inclusivity and stability so as to avert threats and challenges to sustainable development including climate change, unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, conflict and forced migration.
The National Youth Policy clearly articulates that the current urban and rural structures allow for very minimal participation of youth in the economic, social, and political arena, and therefore youth participation is minimal in decision-making processes at both a local and national level. The policy calls for the establishment of various structures wherein young people’s views may be solicited in the development and review of national policies.
There are several mechanisms for youth participation in governance and leadership roles that have been developed in Eswatini, primarily under the MOSCYA and ENYC. The ENYC is in the process of reviving Tinkhundla Youth Committees in all 59 Inkhundla in Eswatini, representing ENYC and youth at constituency level. Most programs are delivered through these committees. The TYAs work closely with the Youth Development Consortium which is composed of youth-led and youth-serving organizations. Both these structures undertake advocacy including popularizing existing youth frameworks which also helps align youth with Government supported areas.
