The Life Skills Education (LSE) is a flagship programme under the Safeguard Young People Program. The ENYC facilitates the LSE in different communities in all the four regions of the country through the support of UNFPA Eswatini under the safeguard young people programme and the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. This is an annual activity that begins with a training of youth peer educators, who then conduct the LSE sessions in their respective communities. The ENYC oversees the activity until completion. The facilitators use an LSE Manual, which is an eleven-unit guide on how to disseminate information to young people focusing on issues of, recognizing the importance of adhering to their own values, comprehensive learning about their bodies’ functionality, how to deal with sexual and reproductive changes and understanding their feelings and behavioural patterns. Since inception in 2016, the program reached more than 2000 young people in urban, peri-urban and rural settings.
The Government of Eswatini, through the Eswatini National Youth Council (ENYC), recognizes the vital role of the LSE Facilitators Resource Manual in equipping out-of-school youth with essential life skills and knowledge. While the manual has been instrumental in addressing key SRHR issues and promoting positive social change, it is crucial to acknowledge that the evolving needs of young people necessitate a comprehensive update and expansion. The ENYC led the exercise of reviewing the manual to incorporate units on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business acumen, and other essential skills that will enable young people to create sustainable livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to the national economy. The manual has also integrated units on mindset change, self- confidence, stress management, and mental health strategies, empowering young people to navigate challenges with greater strength and optimism. The review was done in collaboration of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Civil Society Organizations and young people.
